  • Ysgol Haf Plaid Cymru
    Glan-Llyn
    July 17th 2011

Croeso i Glan Llyn ac i Ysgol Haf Plaid Cymru - 85 mlynedd ers yr Ysgol Haf gyntaf ym 1926 ym Machynlleth. Cynhaliwyd yr Ysgol Haf 1926 yn Senedd-Dy Owain Glyndwr. Buon nhw'n trafod addysg, llywodraeth leol, y gyfraith yng Nghymru ac Iwerddon, y gyllideb Gymreig a natur ac amcenion cenedlaetholdeb cymreig. Yn ei ddarlith, ar egwyddorion cenedlaetholdeb, gosododd Saunders Lewis cenedlaetholdeb a chenedligrwydd cymreig yng nghyd-destun hanes a diwylliant Ewrop.

Roedd gan y Blaid 176 o aelodau ac, yn ôl y llun, roedd 53 - bron traean ohonynt - yn yr Ysgol Haf.

Mae'n dda gyda fi ddweud hefyd bod 70 yn bell o fod yn draean o'n haelodaeth - a bydden ni byth yn ymdopi â'r tri/pedwar mil o bobl byddai hynny'n golygu. Mae Geraint a'r staff wedi gwneud gwaith ardderchog i drefnu'r penwythnos yma a diolch yn fawr iawn iddynt.

I wonder if the Plaid members at that first summer school in Glyndwr's Senedd thought it would take 85 years for us to get our own Senedd, our own law-making parliament! I'm sure they would have been extremely proud that it was Plaid Cymru that delivered it.

We are again seeing the significance of Welsh nationalism in a European context - the success of our referendum against the backdrop of momentous events in Scotland, Catalonia, Flanders, the Basque Country and elsewhere, where huge constitutional changes are taking place. We will be discussing how this affects politics in Wales.

One significant issue that wasn't discussed in 1926 was Welsh economic problems, even though this was the year of the General Strike. In the middle of another serious financial crisis, we will be looking at Wales' economy and the economies of other small countries and I'm delighted to use this occasion to launch a report I commissioned by Adam Price: 'The Flotilla Effect - Europe's Small Economies through the Eye of the Storm'.

We have a full programme of events and many other issues to discuss including, of course, preparation for the local council elections next year.

Let's mark this summer school with a photo.

This is a momentous time for us as a party. We are undertaking a comprehensive review of membership, party structures, communication and campaigning, as well as our vision and message. I am looking forward to this chance for us to re-group and re-connect with the people of Wales. We've got a lot to do to revitalise and strengthen the party; to take on the new challenge we face, and the work starts now. Let's enjoy it.
