The presentation took place in Cardiff where Jill accepted the Welsh votes flanked by two symbolic 'sharks' representing the dangers to getting a fair deal on trade.

The Sixth World Trade Organisation Ministerial Conference, takes place in Hong Kong between 12 - 16 December 2005. Jill Evans will be lobbying on behalf of the trade justice movement in Wales for a fair deal from the negotiations to help alleviate poverty and bring social justice to world trade.

Crucial issues to be dealt with in Hong Kong include making sure that producers in the developing world have fair access to global markets so that they can sell their goods at a fair price. This is important to help alleviate poverty and suffering in the developing world and promote sustainable development.

    Jill Evans MEP said:

"I am going to Hong Kong to lobby on behalf of the millions of people who want to see social justice at the heart of world trade. In a ballot run by the Make Poverty History campaign, 100,000 people in Wales voted for trade justice and it will be my privilege to deliver their votes in Hong Kong.

The fact is that we need to get the international rules right to ensure that local farmers and local producers are able to produce good quality local food for local markets.

The decision makers at the WTO must understand how much is at stake and they must also be aware of the huge depth of feeling amongst millions of people around the world. People of all backgrounds want to see producers in the developing world have fair access to global markets so they are able to sell their produce at a fair price. We will be in Hong Kong to ensure that their voice is heard."

    Diwedd/Ends.
