  • Welsh youth organisation makes worldwide appeal from Brussels
    May 4th 2010

Fourteen young people from Ceredigion visited the European Parliament at the invitation of Plaid MEP Jill Evans where they presented the Urdd Peace and Goodwill Message.

The Urdd Peace and Goodwill Message is an annual tradition which dates back to 1922 when the very first goodwill message was sent from the children of Wales to the world. Peace and Goodwill Day is officially celebrated on 18 May, when the message will be presented in Wales.

The group are part of the Urdd Gobaith Cymru Ceredigion Forum, and include pupils from Ysgol Penweddig, Penglais, Tregaron, Llanbed and Dyffryn Teifi. They were accompanied by Mrs Elin Williams, a teacher at Ysgol Dyffryn Teifi who helped them craft their message which this year highlights the dangers of ignoring climate change.

The message can be read online here.

    Jill Evans MEP said:

"I'm pleased that Urdd members chose the European Parliament to present this message of peace and goodwill. Their message is a powerful reminder of the danger of ignoring climate change, and I want to pay tribute to them for their work.

"We also held a question and answer session, and the group were able to see some of the parliament and observe a meeting of the Environment Committee.

"As they say in their message, the clock is ticking, and time running out if we are to halt the worst effects of climate change. These young people's powerful message will remind European politicians how important it is to act urgently to deal with climate change."

    Diwedd/Ends.
