  • Plaid MEP welcomes Euro investment in regional transport hub
    April 9th 2009

Plaid’s Vice-President and MEP Jill Evans will visit Swansea on Thursday, April 9th.

She will visit the Quadrant Bus Station, which, following the funding announcement by the Assembly’s Minister for Transport Ieuan Wyn Jones AM, will soon be redeveloped.

The funding for the scheme is made up of two major components – the Assembly Transport Grant and European Convergence Funding.

    Jill Evans stated:

“It is clear that this outdated bus station is in desperate need of redevelopment. Swansea, as regional capital of the south west of Wales, needs to be leading the way in terms of creating a transport hub. In this European election campaign we will be fighting to connect all parts of Wales with the rest of the EU.

“We cannot expect to attract more people on to public transport if the facilities that go with it are not up to the mark. Following the funding announcement by Plaid’s Transport Minister Ieuan Wyn Jones, Swansea will now be in a position to attract more people onto public transport by creating a comfortable fit for purpose transport hub.

“The use of European Convergence funding to part fund this scheme is to be welcomed an shows how European Strategic monies are being utilised to help deliver important projects for the people of Wales at a time when many are struggling to cope. This is very different from the reckless approach we have seen from London leading to the credit crunch and economic hardship for many. Plaid’s One Wales government is helping Wales weather the storm, on the side of people trying to cope with the credit crunch.

Swansea-based AM Dr. Dai Lloyd added:

“For years, Labour and Liberal-led Councils have talked about redeveloping the Quadrant. Plaid has been campaigning for this redevelopment over a number of years.

“I am pleased that after less than two years of the One Wales Government at the National Assembly, Plaid has actually delivered the necessary funds.”
