Ynys Môn’s Sara Medi Jones, who works for Jill Evans MEP in Brussels, has questioned US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on independence for Wales, Scotland and other European nations.
Sara Medi, who is aged 24 and a former pupil of Ysgol Gyfun Llangefni, put the question at what was described as a ‘town hall’ meeting in the European Parliament. She said:
“Meeting Hilary Clinton was a memorable experience. She was charismatic and wanted to reassure the audience about the continuing relationship between Europe and the United States.
“I believe it is important to establish support for our case among other countries, and so I asked her if she supported the increasing autonomy and eventual independence of European nations such as Wales, Scotland and Catalonia. She replied saying that she wouldn't dare interfere with internal EU policies.
“I am disappointed that she did not answer the question as the matter of Welsh independence is not solely internal politics - as Mrs Clinton claimed - but very much a matter of international politics.”
Jill Evans MEP said:
"I am not surprised that Secretary of State Clinton was unable to give her opinion on the question of independence, given her position. However, we in Plaid Cymru use every opportunity to raise the subject of independence for Wales on an international stage."
