Rhodri Glyn Thomas AM has described the debate he called at the National Assembly for Wales as very productive. The Carmarthen East and Dinefwr Assembly Member was delighted with the contribution from all parties in recognising the concerns in Wales and aims to take that message to Brussels as he meets with the Hans-Gert Pöttering, president of the European Union.
Rhodri Glyn Thomas AM said:
“The debate was very constructive and I am very pleased that the views of Wales were represented at a national level. Whilst the Assembly does not have a remit over foreign affairs it is important that when the country, through individuals and organisations shows concern, we recognise that at a political level.
“The debate gave all AMs the chance to express the views of their constituents and I will be taking that message to Brussels.”
Ieuan Wyn Jones AM added:
“Here in the Assembly, we are sickened by the deaths of so many innocent men, women and children in this conflict. This ceasefire, as fragile as it is, must be made to last. There cannot be a military solution; it has to be a political solution - viable for both Israel and Palestine.”
Plaid International Affairs Spokesperson Jill Evans MEP said:
"The numbers of deaths and injuries following the Israeli invasion are horrific, with over 1300 people dead and well over 5000 injured. There are over 400,000 people left without running water.
"Even a medical centre and Welsh funded mobile dental clinic were destroyed in the bombing, and Wales must now address the humanitarian needs. I hope that the Welsh Health Minister will respond quickly and positively to Plaid's proposal that Wales takes part in European efforts to offer medical treatment to Palestinian children injured in the invasion of Gaza."
