  • Call for urgent Nantygwyddon meeting with European Commission
    December 11th 2001

Jill Evans MEP has called for an urgent meeting with the European Commission to discuss the findings of the National Assembly for Wales Independent Investigation into Nantygwyddon Landfill site.

Ms Evans, who is Plaid Cymru the Party of Wales European Leader, said:

"Many of the issues mentioned in the report relating to nuisance, health effects and environmental damage are already being investigated by the Commission following the official complaints I made to them about a breach of European law. I sent further evidence on the possible misuse of European funding to the Commission in October this year and they are also looking into this issue.

"Given the Investigator's conclusion that Labour-controlled Rhondda Borough Council could not have afforded to build the tip without the European Regional Development Funds grants they received, I feel that all of the evidence should now be brought together to ensure that swift action can be taken.

"As a resident living in the shadow of this tip and having campaigned for its closure for many years, I welcome Rhondda Cynon Taff Council's decision to close the site. I now want to see every effort made by all those involved to close the site and carry out the necessary remedial work so that we are not living with this rubbish polluting our community for years to come.

"I believe that the Commission has an important role to play in achieving this and I will be asking for their support."

    Diwedd/End.
