Plaid MEP Jill Evans is backing unique new proposals in the European Parliament that will bring more transparency to the activities of lobbyists.
MEPs vote on Thursday on a package of proposals including a register for those lobbying the European institutions, full financial disclosures of interests and a new code of conduct with penalties for infringement.
Speaking ahead of the vote in Brussels, the Plaid MEP said:
"The European Parliament must live up to people's expectations of honesty and openness. This means that all those who try and influence policy in Brussels must register as lobbyists. They must be open about the companies or interests they represent. And the rules should also cover members of advisory bodies of the European Commission and governments who may be paid by the private, governmental or non-governmental sectors.
"It is estimated that there are about 15,000 lobbyists and 2,500 lobby organisations in Brussels There should be no delay in bringing in these changes. We want the register set up by the end of this year.
"The new rules won't affect my ability as an MEP to fight for Wales' interests. The role of regional authorities and representative offices in Brussels - such as the Welsh Assembly office to the EU - has been recognised as part of the EU's multi level governance. So their work is not seen as lobbying for any financial or business interest.
"The EP is leading the way in trying to rebuild trust between politicians and the public. I hope our example will be followed by Westminster and Cardiff Bay."
The vote takes place in Brussels on Thursday.
