  • LNG Milford Haven - UK Government could face action
    March 31st 2009

Plaid MEP Jill Evans has welcomed the European Commission's announcement that it is to look at bringing possible infringement proceedings against the UK Government in relation to the LNG Terminal at Milford Haven.

The confirmation came at a meeting of the European Parliament's Petitions Committee in Brussels where Ms Evans spoke in support of a petition submitted by campaigner Rodney Maile and supported by many local people. The petition has outlined potential breaches of European law in relation to the terminal. The first shipment of liquefied natural gas arrived at the site last week.

The European Commission has said that they are not satisfied that the UK Government has fulfilled its obligations under EU law to carry out proper Environmental Impact and Safety assessments.

Speaking after the hearing in Brussels, Ms Evans said:

"There has been a failure to consult with the local community with regard to the siting of the LNG terminal and people are very concerned about this development. The arrival of the first shipment of liquefied natural gas in the last few days has made this more urgent.

"I am pleased that the European Commission is taking this seriously and is looking into the failure to carry out a proper risk assessment.”
