LNG and Hafod landfill protestors take their case to Europe

Protestors from Wales are out in force in Brussels this week. Environmental groups are petitioning the European Parliament this Wednesday where they are being supported by Plaid Cymru MEP Jill Evans and Plaid Cymru AM Bethan Jenkins.

Protestors against the LNG pipeline will give further evidence to the European Parliament's Petitions Committee. Their petition was lodged last December and the European Commission has been looking into possible breaches of EU law relating to the 150 mile long pipeline stretching from Milford Haven to Gloucestershire which in parts runs within a few metres of houses and schools. A second petition will be discussed on the safety of the LNG terminals in Milford Haven.

Also on Wednesday, residents opposed to the Hafod landfill site near Wrexham will give evidence on their petition handed in by Jill Evans MEP. Their submission refers to potential breaches of EU law because of part of the site's status as a Special Area of Conservation and because of the effect on health and quality of life in the area.

Speaking ahead of Wednesday's hearing in Brussels, Jill Evans said:

"This is a big day for Wales in Brussels. There is huge public concern surrounding both the LNG pipeline and the Hafod Landfill and I was pleased to bring so many constituents directly affected by the problems to Brussels to give first hand evidence to MEP's .

"In both of these cases the protestors have been failed by the authorities. Developments are not and cannot be allowed which are against European laws in place to protect our health and our environment. I would urge others in Wales who think they may have a similar case to contact me".
