Speaking at the launch conference of a new European Network for Peace and Human Rights, Welsh Euro MP Jill Evans has called on politicians and decision makers to wage war against the poverty and oppression that feeds fanaticism and terrorism.
Ms Evans was chairing part of the gathering which brought together more than 250 delegates from 37 countries. Speaking from the conference held in the European Parliament in Brussels the all-Wales MEP said:
"Globalisation has benefitted a privileged minority whilst ravaging the planet and leaving millions disenfranchised and starving. The arms trade, the abuse of human rights, the plight of the Palestinian people, low level radiation and all the issues that threaten our safety and survival have come together in the aftermath of September 11th."
"Of course we condemn the attacks in the US where 3,000 lives were lost, but we also condemn a system in which 30,000 people die everyday from malnutrition while there are enough resources not only to feed but also to house, educate and provide a job for every person on this planet."
"Globalisation is not about trade any more than nuclear weapons are about keeping the peace. It is about power and control and our task is to create strong enough networks to ensure that people themselves have the power to control their futures."
