The European Court of Justice (ECJ) ruled this week that information on the location of GM crops must be disclosed to the public. (1)
Longstanding anti-GM campaigner Plaid MEP Jill Evans commented:
"The European Court of Justice has sent a clear signal that farmers have no right to plant genetically-modified crops behind our backs. This applies equally to Wales where the One Wales government has adopted the most stringent measures to keep Wales GM free.
“GM crops are unnecessary and unwanted by most consumers. In cases where GM crops are grown, the very least we can expect is full transparency from the producer. Neighbouring farmers and beekeepers need to know if they risk contamination from GM crops.
“Today's victory for transparency follows yesterday's victory against an aggressive attempt by the Commission to force authorisation of a Monsanto strain of genetically modified maize in Greece and France. (2) Biotech companies and the European Commission must wake up to the fact that GM crops can neither be forced upon us nor grown in secret."
