  • Evans welcomes new GM restrictions
    July 2nd 2003

Long standing anti-GM campaigner and Plaid Cymru Euro MP Jill Evans has welcomed today's vote in the European Parliament to tighten regulations on GM labelling. MEPs supported tough new rules, strenghtened by amendments proposed by the Welsh MEP.

Speaking after the vote in Strasbourg, Jill Evans MEP, who represents the whole of Wales in the European Parliament, said:

"This is a victory for consumer choice and common sense. The member states will now have to implement legislation that will require virtually all foodstuffs and animal feed containing GM to be clearly labelled. We as consumers have a right to know what's in the food we eat and the European Parliament has defended this.

"It also means that member states will be able to take measures to prevent GM contamination of other products or crops. The National Assembly for Wales could pass new rules to prevent the GM pollution of organic and conventional crops. This is a major breakthrough for those of us who want to ensure a GM-free Wales and I urge the National Assembly to use these new regulations to help achieve this."
