Plaid MEP Jill Evans has welcomed a group of visitors to the European Parliament in Brussels from the Young Farmers Club Wales.
The group of twenty one young farmers from all around the country was given a guided tour of the Parliament. They also took part in a question and answer session with Ms Evans in the visitors’ gallery of the European Parliament.
Speaking after the meeting, the Plaid MEP said she was impressed by their interest in European issues. Ms Evans said:
"I was very pleased to be able welcome these young people from Wales to the European Parliament. They had a keen interest in European issues, and no wonder when the EU has such an impact on our agricultural industry. It's important to encourage an interest in the work of the EU, after all, European Union directives and regulations increasingly affect all our lives."
One key issue raised during the meeting was the effect of increased dairy product imports from Ireland on the price Welsh dairy farmers get for milk. Ms Evans added :
"There is a great deal of concern that imports of dairy produce from Ireland are going to increase considerably over the next year. The young farmers expressed concern that this will force down the price that farmers get for a litre of milk.”
