Commenting on today's mass lobby of the UK Parliament in support of the rights of the 3 million EU citizens living in the UK and the more than one million UK citizens living in other EU countries, Plaid MEP Jill Evans said:
"This event highlights the very real concerns that people have about how leaving the EU will affect their rights to live and work freely. It is causing real distress and needs to be resolved as a priority.
"We are all European citizens and I want to see the rights and privileges associated with that citizenship protected for those who already enjoy it.
"A few months ago I published a major piece of legal research showing how associate EU citizenship could be legally implemented without having to change the EU's founding treaties.
"Although EU citizenship comes through living in a member state, once that citizenship is conferred, it becomes a fundamental right of the individual that cannot be taken away and this is supported by international law.
"I would like to see this pursued as part of the negotiations and so would very many of my constituents who have written to me."
