Plaid Cymru European Leader Jill Evans today sent out a St. Patrick's Day Call to the people of Wales. The MEP, who represents the whole of Wales in the European Parliament, claims that Ireland is benefiting immensely due to its Presidency of the EU, which it has held since January.
Speaking today Jill Evans stated, "Ireland is currently playing a leading role within Europe. The presidency means that the Irish Government is setting the European agenda over this six-month period. Ireland's position on a range of important issues is therefore forming the core of European debate."
Ireland currently acts on behalf of the Union in relations with countries outside the EU and also represents Europe in international fora such as at the United Nations and World Trade Organisation.
She added, "On this St. Patrick's Day Ireland is very much at the forefront of European politics. It is only through direct independent representation within the European Union that we in Wales can achieve the same level of influence.
"We have seen a number of examples where Wales' opinions have been ignored by the UK Government. Wales' view on the war in Iraq and our anti-GM stance are just two such examples.
"Of the 10 new member states that will join the EU on May 1st, five are smaller than Wales. The inequality of the situation means we risk being left behind."
