Plaid President, Jill Evans MEP, spoke at Wales’s first 24 hour sustainability event, "Project Twenty 4", last Friday (18th February) at University of Wales Trinity St. David’s Carmarthen campus.
Speaking to people from the world of business, government and community networks, the all-Wales MEP spoke about her vision for a sustainable future and outlined the European Union's sustainability policies.
Jill Evans said,
“Investing in sustainability is not only an investment in our planet, but in new industries that could offer job opportunities. For example, in 2008, 266,000 people were employed in Germany’s renewable energy sector.
“The Welsh government is leading the way on this. Deputy First Minister, Ieuan Wyn Jones, has announced a £20 million programme to boost the sustainable economy by helping business in the west of Wales. The money will turn locally grown crops into commercial products.
“Several Welsh universities are pioneering ways of helping Welsh companies to develop new low carbon technologies and new ways of making products that were traditionally made from oil.
“It’s not only the government of Wales that are working towards a sustainable future. The people of Wales are too. There were new and exciting ideas at the conference about how to further green our economy and I’ll be working with the community groups and companies to put these ideas into action.”
