Jill Evans MEP signs up for Earth Hour
In her speech at the party conference, Plaid president, Jill Evans MEP will ask delegates to sign up to the WWF World Earth Hour (Saturday 26th March 8:30pm). Party members will be asked to switch off their lights for one hour to demand action on climate change.
The long-standing environmental campaigner, who took part in last year’s earth hour, will tell delegates that by joining a billion people across the world in switching off, they will send out a strong message for a sustainable future.
Jill Evans MEP said,
“From Caernarfon Castle to Llandaf Cathedral, from Tintern Abbey to the National Library, from the Senedd to Newport clock tower, the lights will go out in buildings all over the country for Earth Hour at 8:30 on Saturday night. This is a simple and visible action on climate change. Its one hour of darkness for a brighter future.
“Climate change is the greatest threat facing our planet today. By switching off their lights for one hour this Saturday our members will join a billion people around the globe in calling for a real commitment to renewable energy and sustainable development.
“Plaid in government ensured Wales’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. We will continue to build a green and sustainable economy. If every individual makes a small contribution on Saturday night, this will have a huge effect overall.”
A number of Welsh organisations have signed up to this year’s Earth Hour including local authorities, schools, the Millennium Stadium, a number of castles and the National Library of Wales. Further afield, global landmarks such as Sydney Harbour Bridge, CN Tower in Toronto, San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge and the Coliseum in Rome will all stand in darkness.
Ends.
