  • Hopes for progress on Hafod landfill petition
    December 4th 2008

Plaid MEP Jill Evans is hopeful of progress in the near future on a petition from opponents to the Hafod landfill site near Wrexham that has been submitted to the European Parliament.

Ms Evans has been supporting campaigners against the landfill site.

The petition was deemed worthy of further investigation after potential breaches of EU law were identified. The European Parliament's Petitions Committee asked the European Commission to investigate and this process has been ongoing for the past few months.

The Plaid MEP had been due to meet senior officials at the European Commission in Brussels this week to seek an update on progress, but the meeting was cancelled because the UK authorities have not yet provided their response.

Speaking from Brussels, Jill Evans MEP said:

"The European Commission has been undertaking further investigation into potential breaches of EU law in respect of the Hafod landfill site. I'm pleased that progress has been made and I hope this matter can be concluded as early as possible.

"We are now waiting for a response from the UK government, and they are required by law to respond before 16 December. We will then be able to see what measures need to be taken.

"The sheer volume of work of the committee has meant a long wait for progress but I thank the local campaigners for their patience and hope that these matters can be resolved very soon."
