All-Wales Plaid Cymru MEP Jill Evans is backing a pan European campaign to increase investment in renewable energy. This follows the European Commission's unambitious proposals on energy published this week which sets a target of just a 20% cut in harmful carbon dioxide emissions by 2020.
Most scientists agree that a cut of at least 30% is needed to limit the global increase in temperatures to 2 degrees compared to 1990 levels.
Now Ms Evans is calling on people in Wales to support the campaign by signing an online petition at www.eurenew.eu which calls for a European Treaty on Renewable Energy.
Commenting, the Plaid Cymru MEP said:
"It may already be too late to tackle climate change, but we must act now for the sake of future generations. Greater investment in renewable energy is the way forward if we are to tackle the root causes of global warming, not continued investment in dirty and dangerous nuclear power.
"Survey after survey has shown that most people across Europe want to see an end to nuclear power and more done to promote renewable energy. That's why I'm backing this campaign for a new European Treaty on Renewable Energy.
"This is just as important to us in Wales as anywhere else and I'd like to call on people in Wales to support this campaign by signing the online petition at www.eurenew.eu ."
