  • MEP backs moves to ban toxins from children's toys
    May 25th 2005

Plaid Cymru MEP Jill Evans (pictured) is calling for tough new European rules to outlaw dangerous toxic substances in children's toys. The Welsh MEP is a member of the European Parliament's Environment Committee which is discussing a new law on toxic phthalates in plastics used to make some children's toys. Ms Evans took along examples of children's toys that contain phthalates to the meeting to highlight the dangers to other MEPs.

    Ms Evans explained,

"The proposal is to ban three of these chemicals from toys but only to ban another three in toys for children under three. This proposal is nonsensical and unrealistic. The only sure way of preventing young children from putting these dangerous toys in their mouths is to ban phthalates altogether."
