The campaign for tough new rules to regulate potentially hazardous chemicals that are present in everyday household products continued in Brussels today as all Wales Euro MP Jill Evans welcomed three representatives (Enid Jones, Irene Perkins, Enid Brown of the NFWI (National Federation of the Women's Institute) in Wales to Brussels for a hearing of the European Parliament's Petitions Committee.
The Committee is considering a 78,000 signature petition submitted by the WWF and the NFWI calling for better regulation of hazardous chemicals.
The Welsh contingent arrived in a red double decker bus carrying examples of the hazardous chemicals present in household products to highlight their campaign.
Some of the campaigners had their blood analysed as part of the WWF's campaign for better regulation of hazardous chemicals. Jill Evans also had her blood tested with the results showing contamination from a variety of 33 chemicals present in the environment.
Speaking from Brussels, Jill Evans MEP said:
"I was delighted that people from Wales were able to attend today's committee in person. It's so important for MEPs to hear first hand from people who are affected by this kind of chemical contamination. The challenge now is to make sure that the new European law is strong enough to ban the most dangerous chemicals and regulate those we use every day.
Out of 100,000 existing chemicals only five have restrictions placed upon them. There is a lack of information on the health and environmental effect of most substances and that must be tackled."
