Welsh Euro-MP Jill Evans will join protestors at a rally outside the Labour Party Spring Conference in Cardiff this Sunday (2nd February) to show her support for the sacked Friction Dynamex workers.
Ms Evans, who is Wales' representative on the European Parliament's Employment and Social Affairs committee, has been a prominent critic of the Labour government for refusing to offer better protection for Welsh workers.
Speaking before the rally Ms Evans said:
"The way these workers have been treated is despicable. What is even more despicable is the inaction of this Labour Government when it comes to protecting workers rights. The failings of the current law has been shown up by the Friction Dynamex dispute."
Plaid Cymru MPs, with the backing of the TGWU, recently attempted to amend new employment legislation currently going through Westminster, in an effort to revoke controversial rules originally introduced by the Conservatives. The Labour Government blocked their amendment.
After the rally, on Monday Jill Evans MEP will be in the European Parliament for a debate on the Information and Consultation of Workers Directive. She has attacked the UK government for going against other EU countries and opposing the Directive which aims to strengthen workers rights to be consulted before important decisions are made relating to the future of their jobs. She said:
"A year after the Corus redundancies it seems that Labour have still not acted to protect our workers. Whilst other EU countries are embracing workers rights Tony Blair and Labour have insisted on a six year delay before the directive becomes law in the UK. This means that Wales will still be vulnerable to more large scale redundancies such as Corus for the next six years."
Jill Evans MEP will be available for interview at the rally on Sunday which assembles at 10am at the Temple of Peace before marching on to the Labour Party UK Spring Conference at 11am.
