  • Jill Evans MEP calls for a Peace Institute for Wales
    November 18th 2009

Jill Evans MEP will be in Carmarthen this coming Friday, the 20th November, speaking about her thoughts on a Welsh Peace Institute and the various peace initiatives that exist throughout Europe. The long-time peace campaigner and Chair of CND Cymru will tell the audience that Wales has historically been a peace-loving, welcoming nation, but are in danger of losing this characteristic with the increasing militarisation of the country.

    Jill Evans MEP said,

“Wales has always claimed to be a nation that’s defined by having peace and justice at its heart. But that principle of peace and justice is now being eroded because, as a nation, we don’t have the powers to make our own decisions.

“We’re being put in a position where projects like the new St. Athan development are being forced upon us without our consent. Our country is becoming increasingly militarised against our wishes.

“The voices that push this new, aggressive agenda often quote increased employment opportunities, but evidence points to this being a myth.

“The establishment of a new peace institute will do far more for the Welsh economy, and more importantly it will help Wales play its part in promoting peace and justice throughout the world.”

    Diwedd/Ends.
