  • Easter: Jill Evans to speak at Aldermaston
    March 19th 2008

This Easter marks the 50th anniversary of the first CND march to the Aldermaston Atomic Weapons Establishment - the heart of Britain's nuclear weapons programme - and Plaid Cymru Deputy President and Chair of CND Cymru Jill Evans MEP will be amongst the speakers at the demonstration.

Jill Evans, who is a lifelong campaigner for peace, said today:

“Fifty years ago the Aldermaston march drew public attention to the danger of nuclear weapons. Fifty years on we are back here. Instead of disarming, in line with its international treaty commitments, the British government is developing a new generation of nuclear weapons.

"Speaking at Aldermaston - fifty years after the first members of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament marched here in protest - will be an inspiration to me. It is a time to reaffirm our commitment to stop the bomb. The biggest threat we face in the world today is climate change and nuclear weapons can do nothing to defend us from that. Instead they make world a much more dangerous place.

"I will reaffirm Plaid Cymru's unwavering commitment to nuclear disarmament and the party's opposition to these illegal and immoral weapons of mass destruction."
