  • MEP urges more protests in wake of nuclear vote
    March 15th 2007

Plaid Cymru Deputy President Jill Evans MEP says that last night's Trident vote in the Westminster Parliament highlights more clearly than ever the need for protests to continue.

    Speaking today she said:

"The UK government has not listened to what people in Wales and across the UK have been saying - that these new nuclear weapons are not only costly in financial terms, but they also make the world a more dangerous place.

"The Labour government - with the enthusiastic support of the Tories - has wasted the opportunity to honour the legal commitment made by Britain 35 years ago in the Nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty to disarm its nuclear weapons.

"If the government refuses to listen, then we must shout louder and step up protests.

"Now is the time for us all to redouble our efforts to persuade the government not waste billions of taxpayers money on weapons of mass destruction."

    Notes

Jill Evans represents the whole of Wales in the European Parliament. She is Chair of CND Cymru.

Jill Evans MEP was arrested at the gates of the British Nuclear Weapons Base at Faslane in Scotland in January during the action to blockade the base. Along with other elected representatives from Wales, and around 30 others from Britain and the rest of Europe, they were at the base to reaffirm Plaid's commitment to nuclear disarmament and illegal and immoral weapons of mass destruction.
