  • MEP to address mass London rally
    February 23rd 2007

Plaid Cymru's Deputy President Jill Evans MEP is to address the mass 'No Trident' rally in London tomorrow (Saturday 24 February - full details below).

A lifelong anti-nuclear campaigner, she spoke at the Cardiff rally last Saturday. She said today that she was very pleased to have been invited to speak in London to convey the feelings of the people of Wales:

"Trident is immoral, illegal and immensely expensive. Nuclear weapons threaten our very existence. Yet the government is planning to spend something like £100 billion on new nuclear weapons which have no relevance to the threats facing Wales, such as terrorism and climate change. This decision on new nuclear weapons is being driven by commercial interests not safety interests.

"The government is holding a so-called consultation with people over the future of Trident. This is our opportunity to send them a loud and clear message from Wales that we don't want Trident and we don't want a replacement. We demand they live up to their legal international obligation to disarm Britain's nuclear weapons."

    Notes

Jill Evans represents the whole of Wales in the European Parliament. She is Chair of CND Cymru.
