  • MEP's loud and clear message from Wales
    April 8th 2004

Wales MEP Jill Evans, the Deputy Leader of Plaid Cymru the Party of Wales, will address a huge rally, including many people from Wales, in London's Trafalgar Square on Friday (tomorrow) to mark the rebirth of the Aldermaston march, highlighting the fear that the Atomic Weapons Establishment is looking to the next generation of nuclear weapons.

Thousands of people, including campaigners, politicians and celebrities, are coming together to say no to a new generation of nuclear weapons. A huge rally in Trafalgar Square, organised by CND, will begin an historic weekend of action to stop the next generation of nuclear weapons being developed in the UK.

Jill Evans, who is Chair of CND Cymru, said today that she wanted to ensure that Wales's opposition to the development of new nuclear weapons was heard loud and clear:

"This nuclear hypocrisy must end. Fifty years of radioactive discharges from AWE Aldermaston have left a legacy of cancer-causing plutonium and uranium in the environment, and yet we now face the prospect - at a time of increasing conflict around the world - of the development of new nuclear weapons by the British and US governments.

"We in Wales have made crystal clear our opposition to the Iraq war, and now we will continue our long-standing opposition to the development of nuclear weapons. Nuclear weapons offer no defence at all against terrorism but are themselves weapons of terror."

Jill Evans said that she was very pleased that amongst the speakers were several people who had addressed meetings and rallies in Wales recently, including Corin Redgrave, who spoke at the Aberystwyth rally, and Kate Hudson, who spoke in Brecon in March:

"People from Wales were involved in the Aldermaston march from the start including Alcwyn Deiniol, a son of former Plaid Cymru President Gwynfor Evans and there will be a strong Welsh presence this year. And there are positive moves around the world.

"At the European level, I was delighted recently that the European Parliament backed a resolution which I put forward supporting the Mayors for Peace Campaign, a campaign which is gaining momentum throughout the world. Led by the mayors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, it brings cities and towns together in solidarity to work for nuclear disarmament. In January this year 567 cities in 108 countries and regions had joined the campaign. The number is growing all the time."

The rally will begin at 11am on the 9th April (tomorrow) and the march will leave the square at 1pm. Other speakers include Tony Benn, Bruce Kent, Jenny Jones Deputy Mayor of London, Roger Lloyd Pack and Jeremy Corbyn MP.

    Diwedd/Ends.
