EXPOSED: Britain's new nuclear weapon plans for more killing power Public Meeting at the Subud Centre, Canal Bank, Brecon tomorrow, March 6, 2pm

Tomorrow (Saturday), Kate Hudson, Chair of British CND will be exposing the Government's plans to build new nuclear weapons at Aldermaston Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) at Berkshire, England. These plans are in contravention of the obligation of the British Government's commitment under Article VI of the nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty (NPT) to disarm itself of its nuclear weapons.

Commenting recently on Ministry of Defence plans to develop new lasers at Aldermaston AWE for use in the simulated testing of new nuclear weapons, Kate Hudson, CND Chair said:

"In breach of all international obligations and the spirit of disarmament, the governments of both Britain and the USA are taking us into a new nuclear era. The USA is developing 'bunker-busting' nuclear weapons for actual use and is researching battlefield nuclear weapons to be used in war. Until now, nuclear weapons states have argued that nuclear weapons are for 'defence'. The British Government is no better - as it is currently developing updated versions of nuclear weapons in the Aldermaston bomb factory.

"I urge everyone concerned about a safe and peaceful future to step up the campaign and end these unthinkable plans altogether. The plans for the development of new nuclear weapons are shameful, and I urge the Government to remember that as a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, it has signed up 'to accomplish the total elimination' of Britain's nuclear arsenal. Nuclear proliferation is absolutely unacceptable to the British people. Compliance with the NPT represents an essential step towards sanity."

    NOTES FOR EDITORS

. A CND 'Month of Action Against new nuclear Weapons' is being launched on Monday March 8th. It aims to raise public awareness about this issue and to put pressure on the British Government not to go down this path. More information from www.cnduk.org phone 020 7700 2393

. On Thursday, 26 February, the European Parliament adopted a resolution, led by Welsh MEP and CND Cymru Chair Jill Evans on "Non-proliferation Treaty Review Conference in 2005 - EU preparation of third NPT PrepCom" (NPT Preparatory Committee Meeting). The vote for the resolution showed overwhelming support for the support for the campaign: 406 to 55 with 15 abstentions. Support came from every political block in the Parliament

. The Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) at Aldermaston already builds and maintains British Trident nuclear warheads. Over 50 years of radioactive discharges have left a legacy of deadly plutonium and uranium in the environment. A new generation of British nuclear weapons is being researched and tested at AWE Aldermaston. The British Government is expected to make a decision about the future of British nuclear weapons during the next parliament. In the US the Bush administration has already released funding for research and development of nuclear weapons. The first Aldermaston march in 1958 was born of a fear of nuclear war. That fear is still here. CND Cymru calls on the Government to halt new nuclear weapons developments, to withdraw support from the US' unlawful policy of pre-emptive wars and comply with the NPT.

. A London to Aldermaston march - "Aldermaston 2004 - Stop the Next Generation of Nuclear Weapons" will take place between April 9th - 12th this year followed by a rally at the Atomic Weapons Establishment at Aldermaston. Contact Delyn Harris in Aberystwyth (01970) 880 834 for information about Welsh participation.

    Diwedd/Ends.
