  • MEP and author to address Common Ground
    October 3rd 2003

With the evidence yesterday of the absence of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, peace and justice groups will be gathering in Newtown tomorrow (Oct 4) to discuss the way forward.

Cynefin y Werin (Common Ground), the international peace and justice network, is organising a dayschool on 'globalisation and militarism'. It is being held in the Methodist Chapel, Back Lane, between 10.30 and 4.30.

Jill Evans MEP, and chair of CND Cymru, will speak about militarism in Europe. She will also analyse the failure of the WTO in September, and the effect on international politics, after her visit to Iraq last month.

Mark Curtis will be discussing British Foreign Policy. In his new book, Web of Deceit, he describes the government lies and subtefuge which has underpinned foreign policy since the Second World War.

"It is obvious that the reasons Tony Blair gave for attacking Iraq are unravelling more and more each week," said Ben Gregory, Chair of Cynefin y Werin. "The ordinary person in Iraq hasn't seen their lives improved, and the 'road map' to peace for Israel and Palestine is leading nowhere."

"There will be an opportunity during the day for people to reflect on the lessons of the campaign to stop the war in Iraq, but more importantly, to plan how peace and justice groups can work together to prevent future wars, and promote peace through global economic justice," said Ben.

During the last dayschool, in Jaunary, 35 different groups from all over Wales were represented
