Plaid Cymru - The Party of Wales’ International Affairs Spokesperson Jill Evans MEP has urged the people of Wales to send a clear signal to George Bush and Tony Blair by supporting tomorrow’s day of action against the war on Iraq.
Ms Evans, who is Chair of CND Cymru, will be addressing a rally in Queen's Square, Wrexham at 1pm tomorrow (Thursday) as part of the action day’s activities. The all-Wales Euro MP said:
"Tomorrow’s programme of rallies, pickets, vigils and other events give us an opportunity to show that the people of Wales believe that pre-emptive military action against Iraq is wrong."
"Such an attack would have no legal or moral justification, it would intensify international tension and conflict, and would lead to the death of many more innocent people."
"Of course Saddam Hussein is a dangerous man who has persecuted the people of Iraq - Plaid Cymru the Party of Wales was saying that in the eighties when the British government was selling him arms. But killing more innocent men, women and children is not going to bring justice to the Iraqi people. This war has little to do with human rights and a lot to do with oil and arms sales."
"We all want to see a democratic government in Iraq, but more bloodshed won’t achieve that. If we do not oppose this US onslaught against Iraq then we all become guilty of perpetrating the horrors we are trying to prevent."
Tomorrow’s events include the rally in Wrexham at 1pm, a mass demonstration at 6pm at the Nye Bevan Statue, Queen Street, Cardiff, and a protest in Caerphilly town centre at 12 p.m. At 11am the Aberdare Peace Group will be picketing the National Assembly in Cardiff Bay and in the evening there will be a candle-lit vigil in Blackwood.
On Monday night Jill Evans MEP addressed a peace rally in Cardiff where she was joined by Jeremy Corbyn MP and Dr Siddiqui, Leader of the Muslim Parliament. After speaking in Wrexham tomorrow Ms Evans will travel to Bridgend where she will address a CND Public Meeting on Friday night at 7pm at the YMCA in Angel Street.
