  • MEP's missile defence warning
    March 1st 2002

Plaid Cymru the Party of Wales MEP Jill Evans will address an anti-war debate in Cardiff on Sunday, when she will warn that the greatest danger facing us is not a missile strike, but the increasingly globalised economy.

Ms Evans is Leader of Plaid Cymru the Party of Wales in the European Parliament, where she represents the whole of Wales. She is also Chair of CND Cymru.

Speaking from Brussels today, she said:

"US National Missile Defense (NMD) is a dangerous and expensive venture that fools people into thinking that they can survive a nuclear war. Abandoning the ABM Treaty is undermining any progress that has been made over recent years in reducing the number and proliferation of nuclear weapons. Indeed, NMD is the first step towards the militarisation of space."

"The biggest threat to our security today is not a tactical missile strike from so called 'rogue states', but the increasingly globalised economy, which can bring the economies of small countries to their knees, and environmental catastrophes brought about by climate change."

Sunday's 'Teach-in' has been organised by concerned human rights activists in Wales to provide a day of debate, workshops and discussions for all, centering on current vital issues such as war and the future for humanity in the 21st century, globalisation, and the contribution of the proposed U.S. National Missile 'Defense' system to increasing world-wide fear and instability. It will be an opportunity to discuss the crises in the world and how 'ordinary' people can act to change the way that politicians act in our name.

The venue is Cardiff University, starting at 10.30 a.m. on Sunday 3 March 2002.

    Diwedd/Ends.
