  • Jill Evans MEP Monthly Report
    November 2012
    In Wales

  • I published research showing that, unlike the UK, Wales is a net beneficiary of EU membership. We are about forty pounds per head better off annually due to the funding we receive. The report can be downloaded fromhttp://jillevans.net/The_Welsh_National_Interest_21-11-2012.pdf andhttp://jillevans.net/EU_Funding_for_Wales_21-11-2012.pdf.

  • I opened my new Wrecsam office. County councillors Arfon Jones (Wrexham) and Arwel Roberts (Denbighshire) attended the opening together with local members.

  • I spoke at the meeting to welcome the ‘White Book of Carmarthen’ to Bridgend.

  • I met David Hughes, Head of Office of the European Commission office in Wales.

  • I visited Cardiff Metropolitan University to meet Professor Antony Chapman, the Vice Chancellor of Cardiff Metropolitan University, the Pro Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mohamed Loutfi, and the university’s Director of Development, Andrew Walker, to discuss the Erasmus Mundus Project and how this enhances the university’s name abroad and promotes Wales.

  • I gave a lecture at Aberystwyth University on “The Eurozone Crisis: Impact, Policies and Way forward.”

  • I was interviewed on the Sunday Politics Show on BBC Wales.

    In the European Parliament

  • I met members of Swansea City Supporters Trust at a meeting on improving football governance through supporter involvement.

  • I met the National Assembly Business and Enterprise Committee in Brussels.

  • I welcomed pupils and staff from Ysgol Glanaethwy, Bangor, to the European Parliament. They were in Brussels to perform at several venues.

  • I jointly tabled an amendment in the Parliament calling for an EU moratorium on fracking. MEPs backed calls for caution, a ban in sensitive areas, and underlined the need for tougher regulation and proper application of existing EU rules, but fell short of supporting a complete moratorium.

  • I voted for an end to the barbaric practice of shark finning in EU waters. The European Parliament adopted the change with an overwhelming majority.

  • I spoke at a conference in Dublin organised by the Europen Green Trust on the “Future of Europe”.

  • I met with officials from the Irish Ministry of Transport in Dublin to discuss the electrification of the Holyhead to Crewe line.

  • I visited the Welsh chapel in Dublin with y Ddraig Werdd Welsh society to support their campaign to preserve the building.
