  • Jill Evans MEP Monthly Report
    July & August 2015

  • I attended the Royal Welsh Show this year and launched my report on the Benefits of EU membership to Wales, which outlines the financial and economic case for Wales in the EU.

  • I invited Fflur Jones, partner at Darwin Grey in Cardiff to Brussels to speak in a conference on EU electoral law reform.

  • During the Royal Welsh Show and the National Eisteddfod I had meetings with several Welsh organisations, NGOs and small businesses in order to discuss EU matters such as the impending referendum and the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP).

  • I voted against the European Parliament’s report on TTIP because the agreement is not in the interests of Wales. The report represents the Parliament’s opinion on the agreement, but does not form part of the legislative process. Some of the proposals threaten, rather than enhance, our democracy as well as our standards and values.

  • I participated in the Greens/EFA conference on the pan-European anti-TTIP campaigns.

  • I voted in favour of a non-legislative report on the reform of copyright because it is an important step forward in reforming and updating the law. Especially important was protecting the "Freedom of Panorama", which was part of the final report, about which many of my constituents in Wales had contacted me. I hope that this report will now inform the Commission's legislative proposals.

  • The Culture and education Committee is drafting a report on the prevention of radicalisation and I am following this on behalf of the Greens/EFA group. I tabled Amendments and participated in the debate in Committee to reflect the fact that is imperative that we work with communities to improve social conditions that can lead to radicalisation.

  • In light of this I have also invited Shereen Williams from Newport to speak in a Greens/EFA conference entitled ‘Searching for a new narrative: The hopes of European Muslims’.

  • On the 70th anniversary of the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima I renewed Plaid Cymru’s call for the Trident Missile defence system to be scrapped.

  • In light of the Greek financial crisis and the crucial talks on their bailout I called for the EU to show solidarity with the Greek people and respect their wishes to end austerity.

  • I welcomed pupils from Ysgol Gyfun Penweddig, Aberystwyth to Strasbourg and sponsored visitor groups from Carmarthen West and Dinefwr and from Queen Elisabeth High School Carmarthen to Brussels.

  • I organised a week’s work experience for Gwern Ifans from Cardiff and Emlyn Hopkin from Brynaman on work experience.
