  • Jill Evans MEP Monthly Report
    December 2012
    In Wales

  • I have written to the Secretary of State for Wales, David Jones MP, asking for a meeting on European funding and the electrification of the Crewe to Holyhead railway line. The EU TEN-T transport fund can cover 50% of the cost of projects such as a study on upgrading this line. Time is of the essence as the closing date for bids is the end of February.

  • I took part in a debate at the Communist University of Wales conference in Pontypridd on “What future in the European Union.”

  • I spoke at the Cymdeithas yr Iaith rally in Caernarfon following the release of the 2011 census figures.

  • I met Menter Iaith Conwy to discuss Local Development Plans.

    In the European Parliament

  • I met members of the FUW to discuss the latest developments on CAP reform and the repercussions for Welsh farming if EU funding for Wales is cut after 2014. Draft figures published by the European Council last month proposed a 7% cut in the overall CAP budget, with direct payments being cut by 5%.

  • I am working on changes to European Union public procurement rules to help local businesses get more government contracts. The European Parliament is currently reviewing the laws adopted in 2004. It is estimated that 48,000 jobs could be created by adopting an effective 'buy-local' policy in Wales.

  • I welcomed students from Bangor University’s Business and Law School to the Parliament in Strasbourg on a visit I sponsored.

  • I spoke in the key debate on the Growth and Jobs Pact before the European summit

    Ends.
