Rydyn ni yma heddiw I gofio Llywelyn ein Llyw Olaf a laddwyd yn 1282. Rydyn ni yma hefyd I edrych ymlaen - I edrych ar y math o genedl y gallen ni ei adeiladu i'r dyfodol.

Dylen ni gael ein hysbrydoli gan y bobl dros y canrifoedd sy wedi body n fodlon ac yn barod i aberthu cymaint dros Gymru.

We are here today to remember - to look back. But also to look forward - to look at the kind of nation we can build for the future. And to be inspired to do that by all those people over the centuries who have been ready to sacrifice so much for Wales.

Mae miloedd o Gymry wedi dod yma dros y blynddoedd, ac yn eu plith, wrth gwrs, y diweddar Richard Livesey.

Amongst the thousands of Welsh people who have come here over the years was, of course, the late Richard Livesey MP. Richard could often be heard speaking for Wales in the House of Commons and later the House of Lords. He was a great advocate for the people in his constituency of Brecon and Radnor. And as the President of the Abaty Cwm Hir Trust from its formation in 1993 he rarely missed this annual conference. In an interview in 2003 he said that one of his earliest campaigning memories was of the direct action campaigns in this area to stop the building of reservoirs to supply water to English cities. He ws inspired by the passion of the people campaigning for the countryside they loved. This was the countryside and the country that Richard Livesey loved too.

    We will miss him.

Gallen ni ddiolch am gyrfraniad cymaint o Gymry rhai o'r cymeriadau mawr - gan gynnwys Glyn James o'r Rhondda a fu farw wythnos ddiwethaf a dreuliodd ei holl fywyd yn ymladd dros Gymru.

Mae gyda ni senedd ifanc ein hunain - a llyweodraeth Cymru. Bydd y referendwm ym mis mai yn penderfynu os bydd Cymru yn ennill pwrerau deddfu llawn o fewn y meysydd polisi sydd wedi cael eu datganoli yn barod.

Llywelyn has been criticised by historians for the intensely personal way he governed - which meant that after his death the merging welsh state fragmented. We have our own emerging Welsh parliament - and a Welsh government. Next year's referendum will determine whether or not Wales will win full law making powers in those policy areas already devolved.

Mae Cymru yn genedl Ewropeaidd a dylen ni gymeryd ein lle en Ewrop. Dydyn ni ddim yn rhy fach - mae chwech aelod wladwriaeth Eqrop yn llai na Chymru. Mae gyda nhw yr holl sefydliadau - ac yn bwysicach, yr holl bwerau - sy'n dod gyda anibynniaeth - pwerau i wella bywyd pobl.

Mae rhaid i ni sicrhau bode in sefydliadau cenedlaethol yn chwarae eu rhan llawn mewn adeiladu'r genedl. Mae rhaid i ni frwydro er mwyn ddiogelu sefydliadau fel S4C, y mae ei annibynniaeth a hyd yn oed ei fodolaeth o dan fygythiad gan y wladwriaeth Prydeinig.

Wales is a European nation and we should take our place in Europe. There are six EU member states smaller than Wales but they have the institutions and, more importantly, the powers that come with independence and with which you can improve the lives of people.

We must ensure that out national institutions play their full part in building our nation. We must fight to defend S4C whose independence and future viability is threatened by the British state. S4C is seen across Europe and around the world as a model which others want to follow. Our fight for the future of S4C is part of a much wider movement for freedom and for equality for all our languages and cultures. we are not just fighting for ourselves and we are not fighting on our own.

To safeguard the future our nation and our language, we have to take our place in the Europe of the Peoples where Wales will be an equal partner with the other real nations of Europe. As Gwyn Alf Williams said there should be no corner on earth and no corner of the human experience where the Welsh language cannot go.

Mae rhaid i ni fod yn uchelgeisiol ac mae rhaid i ni fod yn ddewr. Bydd 2011 yn flwyddyn dyngedfennol. Mae rhaid i ni gredi y nein hunain fel cenedl ac fel pobl - does neb arall yn mynd i frwydro droston ni. Ein cyfrifoldeb ni yw hynny.

2011 will be another crucial year. Many generations have dreamed of a parliament but this generation will see the day. Looking ahead, we sometimes ask questions. If not now, when? If not us, who? We have to be ambitious and we have to be brave. We have to believe in ourselves as a nation - we have to fight for ourselves - no one else will do it for us. Our nation, which is so proud of its past, now holds the pen that writes its future.
